CORRECTIONS TO
U.S. PATENT NO. 6,057,424
"METHOD AND APPARATUS TO SYNTHESIZE DNA AND DNA-LIKE
MOLECULAR STRUCTURES BY APPLYING ELECTRIC FIELDS
TO GASEOUS MIXTURES OF CHEMICAL REACTANTS
CONTAINING TEMPLATE PARTICULATE MATTER"
ISSUE DATE - MAY 2, 2000
Thank you for your interest in this U.S. Patent. It sets forth a new
hypothesis concerning how life originated on Earth. Methods and apparatus are
described to perform experiments to retrace those first life forming steps. If
the hypotheses are proven to be correct, then this work is of great importance.
The inventor of a typical U.S. patent is NOT given the opportunity to review
the text before it issues. This is the case for this Patent. The drawings are
exact copies of what was submitted by the inventor to the United States Patent
and Trademark Office (USPTO). However, the text is constructed at the USPTO from
a series of documents submitted by the inventor. Therefore, in any U.S. patent,
there are typically printing errors made by the USPTO. There are also typically
errors made by the inventor in the form of typos, punctuation mistakes, and
sometimes sentence fragments are missing.
Regretfully, this Patent has all of these types of errors. For example, the
USPTO forgot to include the first three sentences in the Abstract. However, the
inventor made many minor typographical and punctuation errors, and made several
typographical errors in quotes from the literature. A "Certificate of
Correction" will be filed with the USPTO pointing
out these errors. However, that is in the future.
Accordingly, a "Marked-Up Copy Identifying Errors" of U.S. Patent
No. 6,057,424 accompanies this document. The inventor reasons that if he expects
the reader to endure study of this Patent, then he has the responsibility to
carefully proof the Patent and meticulously point out errors.
Miscellaneous hand-written corrections are indicated throughout the text. The
drawings are correct. The remainder is now correct to the best of the inventor's
knowledge. The substantial number of references were all individually checked,
and they are now correct with the indicated hand-written changes.
Beyond the indicated changes, there are five "inserts":
"Insert A", "Insert B", "Insert C", "Insert
D", and "Insert E". They are listed in the following:
The USPTO forgot to print the first three sentences of the Abstract. Those
first three sentences should read as follows:
"Insert A": --Apparatus to synthesize organic
substances that includes means of applying an electric field to gaseous
mixtures containing template particulate matter and the initial chemical
reactants. Methods to synthesize organic substances that include the step of
applying an electric field to gaseous mixtures containing template
particulate matter and the initial chemical reactants. The organic
substances synthesized include DNA and DNA-like molecular structures,
polymers, and proteins.--

The paragraph on page 11, lines 38-54, describes a "First Stage", a
"Second Stage", and a "Third Stage". The "First
Stage" is described in the paragraph on page 11, lines 55-59. The
"Third Stage" is described on page 11, line 60, to page 12, line 12.
For logical continuity, there should have been mention of the "Second
Stage" before the next paragraph. So, the Patent should have had a new
paragraph inserted following the phrase "DNA-like materials." on page
12, line 12, as follows:
"Insert B": --The "Second Stage" above
can be visualized as being accomplished as set forth in Figures 1-8. The
remaining issue is the creation of primordial life itself in an apparatus.--

I forgot to identify the reference of "Glass, 1993" in the
specification on page 17, line 52. Therefore, on page 34, and after the
reference of "Gedulin, Benjamin, and Arrhenius, Gustaf, 1994", a new
reference should be listed as defined in "Insert C" as follows:
"Insert C": --Glass, Robert H., 1993,
"Office Gynecology", Fourth Edition, Williams & Wilkins,
Baltimore, Maryland--

There is a missing sentence in a quote attributed to Aldridge, 1996. On page
26, line 28, and following the phrase "(in Haldane's words).", insert
the following sentence defined as "Insert D" as follows:
"Insert D": --Urey and Miller tried to recreate
this medium, which is often called the primordial soup, by laboratory
simulations of the early Earth.--

There is an erroneous sentence in a quote attributed to Aldridge, 1996. On
page 27, lines 6-8, delete the sentence beginning with the phrase "He has
developed" and ending with the phrase "catalytic clays." In its
place, insert the following sentence defined as "Insert E" as follows:
"Insert E": --He has developed the idea of an
early stage in the evolution of life based on clay, which bridges the gap
between the primordial soup and the first carbon-based cell.--

In conclusion, the amended text of the Patent is now believed to be correct
with the indicated changes. However, if the reader finds any additional errors, the inventor would appreciate
notification ASAP. Thank you.
